FOOD
Number of meals best suitable for the Yorkshire:
AGE: From 2 to 4 months
Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner
AGE: from 4 to 6 months
Breakfast + Dinner
Starting from 6 months the dog will receive one meal a day only
The reduction of the meals must be done gradually, reducing step by step the amount of food given during the meal untill the complete elimination of it.
This process is necessary to avoid gastro-enteric shocks.
Home made food: when preparing home made foods you must be sure to use a varied diet so that the organism of your pet can get all the proteins, vitamins and minerals that need for a correct growth. The most recent nutritional studies however dissuade the home made food since it is more difficult to calculate the exact quantity of substantial nourishing foods depending on the needs of the individual. It is in fact quite common to exceed in the quantity of proteins and mineral and in the general amount of food.
Croquettes: Dry foods is now suggested by most of the trainers, breeders, vets, dog-lovers in general and also by ALIBI Yorkshire. Those dry commercial foods in fact: 1)are especially studied to feed correctly your dog 2)keep a good intestinal mobility 3)it is very difficult that the dog eat more than reccomended since - although appreciated - they cannot compete with the tasty foods home made prepared so that the dog avoids an overfeeding. As long as they are high quality products and are not casually mixed with home made food we also suggest their use.
Obviously the kind and amount of food must be especially planned according to the age, life style and wealth of your dog: a more exuberant subject might need more food while it might be suggested to use a more tasty food for a dog with heatlhy problems and therefore feeding problems.
NB:. Although the Yorkie has a very fast methabolism they get fat quite easily due to the sedentary life usually conducted in apartments.

SUGGESTED FOODS
1) All ....: white and red meat, boneless fish, cheese with moderation and avoiding seasoned or aged cheeses, eggs no more than once a week and with well cooked albumen. You should'nt leave milk at disposition instead of the water but it must be considered as a food at all effects. Especially for the puppies you should give milk only rarely since it could negatevely effect the correct growth of the bones. Same for yogurt.
2) Fruit and vegetables: both raw and cooked. In this last case use also the water where the veggies have been cooked. Since when he is a puppy you should teach your dog to eat a raw carrot or an apple just before the actual meal. Both carrots and apple are very rich of Vitamins and they will also help the teeth exchange (often for this kind of breed is necessary to have the incisor and canine teeth removed by the vet) and to clean them.
3)Rice and pasta should be always given together with the other aliments and they must be well cooked to make the starch in them easily digestible for the dog. Puffed rice and flakes are ready for the use.
4)Dry industrial foods are a very good alternative as long as they are of high quality. On the other sied canned food is not suggested for this breed.
IT IS A VERY GOOD PRACTICE TO GIVE A TEA SPOON OF MAIZE OLI EVERY DAY
